A Variety of Different Settings for Diamonds

Diamond Jewelry and More!

Diamonds can be set in jewelry in many different ways. The prong or claw setting is the one commonly used in diamond rings. The diamond is inserted between three or more prongs that form a holding basket for the stone. The prongs are then folded over the diamond to keep it in place. For one diamond, this is called a solitaire setting, but when several diamonds are used in the ring, the prongs can help to form different shapes, such as V's or ovals to form a cluster of diamonds.

Diamond jewelry takes many forms. There are diamond earrings, diamond bracelets and necklaces as well as brooches. Tiny diamonds placed in earrings sparkle and shine, enhancing one's attire and facial features. When tiny diamonds are used in a piece of jewelry, settings other than prongs are used because the prongs tend to hide the diamond.

Commonly used settings for diamond jewelry.

  • Bezel setting - In a bezel setting, there is preciouse metal surrounding the stone with a lip edge. The secure fit holds the diamond in place and is a good choice for those with an active lifestyle.
  • Channel setting - In a channel setting, the diamond is placed into a groove in the metal. This setting has grown in popularity over the past decade. The diamonds flow in a continuous row with no metal separating them.
  • Invisible setting – The diamonds have grooves cut along their edges. The diamonds are placed on a rail and sit side-by-side looking as if it was one large diamond instead of several. This setting helps to create the illusion of a larger diamond than what is actually in the ring.

Diamonds are a perfect gift for anyone. Although diamond rings are associated with engagements, rings and other pieces of jewelry are suitable for any occasion – birthdays, Mother’s Day, Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
