Care of Diamonds

Once you select the ideal diamond it is important you care for it properly. When cared for right a diamond will last a lifetime.

The good news is most diamonds are easy to care for.

One of the first things you should do to care for your diamond is protect your diamond from aggressive wear and tear. While diamonds are nearly indestructible, you can chip them by hitting them just the right way very hard. Thus it is important you keep them away from any activity that might result in a chip. If you plan on playing sports for example, be sure to take your diamond off first.

Cleaning diamonds is an important part of upkeep.

You’ll notice after time that your diamond begins to appear dull as it collects dirt and dust. This is normal and easily remedied. You only need a small amount of water and ammonia to clean a diamond. You can use a gentle brush to clean the diamond, but be sure to avoid abrading the metal surrounding your diamond.

Many materials can dull your diamond, including lotions and creams. If you wear your ring frequently, make a point to remove it before putting on any lotions or oils.

Diamonds can also scratch and dull each other. Thus if you store your diamonds together, be sure to place each in separate jewelry bags. Alternatively you can keep your diamond in the box it comes in. This will keep it safe for years to come.

Tips for keeping your diamond free of smudges and stains.

  • Once a month provide your diamonds a bath. Simply prepare a small bowl with a cup of water and some liquid detergent. Brush each of your diamonds using an eyebrow brush. Then rinse them with warm water and pat dry.
  • Alternatively you can make a cleansing bath of ½ cup water and ½ cup ammonia. Allow your diamonds to soak for a minimum of 30 minutes. Then rinse and dry.
