Diamond Cuts Emerald Cut Diamond

Purchasing an Emerald Cut Diamond

An emerald cut diamond has a rectangular shape. The surfaces of the diamond appear to be like steps and the diamond itself looks more of an heirloom because of its timeless quality.

However, with an emerald cut, it is easier to see the flaws in the diamond. It is also more expensive because with diamond cutting anything other than a circle cut adds to the value of the stone.

Different Diamond Cuts

The cut of the diamond determines its shape and influence the brilliance of the stone. The cut has to be precise in order to make sure that the diamond will both refract and reflect the light. In addition to the emerald diamond cut, some of the other cuts you can have are:

  • Marquise cut. This diamond cut has 56 facets
  • Pear cut. The diamond is cut in the shape of a pear, which combines a round and a marquise cut.
  • Heart shape
  • Oval cut. The oval is elliptical and also has 56 facets with even sides
  • Princess cut. This is a square cut with the same sparkle as a round cut diamond

What to Watch Out For When Buying Diamonds

When you are in the market for a diamond you need to watch out for certain things that may lower the value of the diamond. The tip of a diamond should come to a small point. If the point is large, it does not look as good and therefore its value diminishes even if it is a large diamond. A marquise diamond should not be long and narrow. It is better to choose a wider diamond in this cut.

Some parts of the diamond may appear more brilliant than others. This effect is quite common in the marquise and pear cut diamonds and is called the bow-tie effect.
