An Engagement Ring: A Promise of Everlasting Love

An engagement ring does not have to include a diamond.

Although the diamond engagement ring is the most traditional form for a ring that means a wedding is in the future, you can have just about any precious stone in an engagement ring.

Some of the common non-traditional engagement rings include:

  • Ruby
  • Emerald
  • Sapphire
  • Tanzanite
  • Aquamarine
  • Pearl

A newer form of engagement ring that many couples are now choosing includes the bride's birthstone.

The Engagement Proposal

Once you buy an engagement ring for the lady in your life, the next step is the proposal. Christmas Eve is often chosen for proposing because it is a time when families like to get together and celebrate. It is also the time of gift giving so a man might choose to wrap the box containing the ring as a present. The lady thinks it is just another piece of jewelry and is therefore surprised when she opens it to find a diamond ring.

Many times receiving an engagement ring is not a surprise and the couple picks out the ring together. Often though, the man takes time to see what type of ring his future bride likes and then makes the purchase on his own. To do this he can get the help of friends to find out her ring size, the type of diamond or precious stone she prefers and whether she like white or yellow gold or even platinum. The cost is also a major factor in choosing the ring and this depends on the diamond itself.

It depends on whether or not you know the answer will be yes whether you choose to propose in public or keep it as a romantic moment just for the two of you.
