Different Settings For Engagement Rings

Engagement ring settings depend on how many stones you want to have in the ring and the size of each one. You can have diamond engagement rings that contain one solitaire diamond that stands above the metal of the ring or you can have a ring where there is a row of diamonds. The setting you choose also determines the cut of the diamond as they have to be cut in a certain way to suit a specific setting.

Diamond Ring Settings

Some of the settings for engagement rings include:

  • Prong or claw setting. In this setting, the diamond sits in a type of basket that is secured with three or more prongs to keep it in place. This type of setting lets you see more of the diamond and just about any shape of diamond is suited for this setting. The prong settings also let more light into the diamond, so it glistens better.
  • Bezel setting. In the bezel setting there is a metal band circling the diamond to hold in place on the gold or platinum base. This provides a lot of protection for the diamonds, but you don't see as much of them as you do with a solitaire. However, it does accentuate the diamond, making it look larger than it actually is.
  • Flush setting. In this setting there is a tapered hole in the metal to hold the diamond in place. This type of setting produces a smooth surface and a very tailored look.

You can also have several settings combined on one ring. This type of engagement ring would be very expensive, not only because of the intricate design, but because it contains several diamonds.
