Diamond Alternatives Fake Diamonds

Fake Diamonds Look Like the Real Thing

Fake diamonds sparkle and shine and are much lowered priced!

However, there are differences between them and true diamonds. To the untrained eye it is very difficult to see the difference, but a jeweller will quickly be able to tell you whether or not your rings have fake diamonds.

If it doesn't really matter if your diamond is not authentic, as long the diamonds appear to be real and stand out, they make perfect diamond alternatives because they are much cheaper.

The most common types of fake diamonds are made from glass, but there are also other kinds of fakes, such as:

  • Cubic zirconia diamonds. These can be machine cut or hand cut. The machine cut stones are hazy and are not polished to a brilliant shine like diamonds. They also have a poor facet arrangement. The hand cut stones look the best.
  • Mossanite. These diamonds are more durable than the zirconia diamonds, but they are still not as hard as the true diamonds. They have a double refraction because they are made by synthesizing carbon. They seem to have dull greyish color and it is hard to get a nice color to them
  • Glass
  • Paste
  • Quartz

If you can read the newspaper through the stones in your rings then they are not genuine diamonds. Usually a jeweller does use specialized equipment, such as a powerful microscope, to discern whether or not you have a true diamond. You also have to remember that there are different color diamonds, so your stone could actually be worth a lot more than you think. Pink, blue and yellow diamonds are very rare and are therefore much more expensive.
