Imitation Diamonds Look Like the Real Thing

Imitation diamonds look so much like real diamonds that it is hard to tell the difference unless you are a jeweller and even then you need to have special miscrocopes.

Even though imitation diamond rings are often though to contain real gemstones, they have entirely different properties from authentic diamonds. Some of the imitation diamond jewelry contains cubic zirconia diamonds, which are actually man made or synthetic diamonds.

Properties of Cubic Zirconia Diamonds

The main difference between a real diamond and a cubic zirconia diamond is the price. The imitation stones are much cheaper than diamonds, no matter what type of jewelry you have them in. Heating yttrium oxide and zirconium oxide creates cubic zirconia. When these imitation diamonds are cut correctly and set in a ring, they look just as exquisite as a real diamond. Because of the affordable price, these diamonds are very popular for all kinds of diamond jewelry.

Another type of imitation diamond jewelry is moissanite. This is not manmade and is a natural mineral. Some people prefer moissanite as a substitute for a diamond in a ring for several reasons:

  • It is harder than cubic zirconia, so it is a more durable imitation diamond
  • It is more brilliant than cubic zirconia
  • It is even more reflective than a diamond

In order to be able to tell whether the diamond in your ring is imitation or genuine, you really would need to take it to a jeweller. However, you can notice subtle differences where you compare cubic zirconia and moissanite jewelry with diamond jewelry. When you look at them together, you will be able to notice differences in the brightness and clarity. However, if you buy the imitation diamonds in a good setting, then you do have an exquisite piece of jewelry.
