The Pink Diamond: Stunning When Set in Platinum

Natural pink diamonds are rare and expensive but they are the most common of the fancy colored diamonds. Very few jewellers have ever seen a pink diamond and therefore it is not something that is readily available at a jewelry store, whether you shop online or off. Most of the pink diamonds on the market are enhanced or treated to bring out the color. The Argyle mine in Australia produces most of the natural pink diamonds in the world. Most of these fancy diamonds are used in rings, especially diamond wedding rings.

Choosing the Best Pink Diamond for Your Ring

When you are evaluating a pink colored diamond, you still have to keep the 4 C's of diamonds in mind.

  • Color. This is the most important quality in evaluating the pink color. There are different grades used for the color, such as fancy deep or fancy vivid. You can have a diamond that is a pale shade of pink or one where the pink is more vibrant and striking.
  • Cut. A master diamond cutter tries to enhance the color and beauty of a pink diamond. The facets are usually arranged so that the path of light is much longer than with a colorless diamond. This will help to pick up the pink color and deepen the hue. What is suitable for a colorless diamond is usually not suitable for a colored one.
  • Clarity. This factor is usually not as important in a colored diamond as it is with a colorless one.
  • Carat. Pink diamonds usually have a less carat weight than regular diamonds. This is because they are more valuable and as the size increases, so does the price.
